France will start stopping small boats in Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to begin stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the UK.
This policy shift follows the Prime Minister sent a letter to the French leader urging him to support the initiative and stating there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to prevent the heavily loaded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police representative states officers will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Notably, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible method to snarl the propellers of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a significant advancement, coming after a short-lived shift towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the previous Interior Minister departed from office.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a summit between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a boat.
Now French authorities will once more be allowed to intercept boats before they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of northern France, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently delaying the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking ways to adapt to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the past.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for response.
